The 1500 block of West Devon Ave. is part of Chicago’s “Little India,” a street bustling with multicultural restaurants and businesses. Click on an image below to learn more about life in this multicultural mecca.
One of the most famous restaurants on Devon is Ghareeb Nawaz. The 24- hour eatery, whose name references a Holy Shrine in India, is known for its cheap prices and massive proportions.
The restaurant also serves traditional Indian ice cream called “Kulfi.” Unlike American ice cream. this treat is made from evaporated milk and is not whipped. Don’t expect to find chocolate chip ice cream here. Flavors are distinctly Indian, like mango, rose, cardamom and saffron.
A complete meal can be had for between four and six dollars, making this restaurant affordable option for locals. According to recent statistics, the median household income in Rogers Park is $37,223 per year.
Not all of the businesses on Devon are Indian. The employees at this Iraqi barber shop primarily speak Arabic, a language spoken by less than one percent of Rogers Park residents.
