Community members gathered at Sullivan High School in Rogers Park on Wednesday Nov 9 for a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of the newly constructed gymnasium dedicated to congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.

Schakowsky, 78, is a Sullivan alumni from the Class of 1962. She serves as a Democratic politician in Illinois. She just won re-election for office in the recent election.

The ceremony had guest speakers such as Chicago Public School’s CEO Pedro Martinez, former Sullivan principal Chad Thomas, and Alderwoman Maria Hadden. Everyone had an opening speech welcoming and celebrating the new gymnasium and Schakowsky’s many accomplishments.

At the ceremony, Schakowsky shared some thoughts on what she hopes for the students with the newly renovated gymnasium.

“I hope for great victory here,” she said, “seeing young men and women getting the exercise they need and hopefully winning some games.”

Maria Hadden, Alderwoman of the 49th ward, was also present at the unveiling. She shared how the new gymnasium impacts the Rogers Park community.

Many community leaders and members were present to celebrate.

“An investment in our school is an investment in our neighborhood.”

Come and see the new gym during Sullivan’s Open House scheduled for Friday Nov 18 from 4:30 to 7pm.
