While some in the city celebrated the traditional Columbus Day Monday, 49th Ward Alderwoman Maria Hadden made a point to wish constituents a Happy Indigenous Peoples Day.

Hadden, in her weekly newsletter, said she was one of the co-sponsors of a resultion aimed at changing the name of the day.

“The significance of this resolution goes beyond the renaming of a federal holiday,” Hadden said. “It is a way to recognize the devastation, struggles, and tragedies our indigenous neighbors endured at the hands of colonialism. It is also a way to lend recognition and celebration to their contributions of our shared history.”

Hadden’s office was closed Monday.

WTTW Chicago recently explored the issue. You can see the report here.
