A Rogers Park man has been charged with trying to beat another man to death with a brick last week in Evanston, in the 700 block of West Howard Street.

Kevin Jones, 35, of the 7500 block of N. Damen Ave., is charged with one count of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, all felonies, according to a statement from Evanston police.

The apparently unprovoked attack took place at about 2:50 p.m., Sept. 28, police said.

Detectives said the victim was walking west in the 700 block of Howard. The offender approached and attacked, striking the victim several times in the head with a brick, without apparent provocation. The offender then fled the scene, but police said a witness provided a description, and an arrest was made shortly thereafter on Howard, west of Ridge.

The victim was a 23-year-old male resident of Chicago. He was transported to St. Francis Hospital by the Evanston Fire Department where he remains in critical but stable condition, police said.

This incident appears to be a random act. The investigation has not revealed a connection between the offender and victim prior to the incident, police said.

Chicago Police Officers from the 24th District assisted with the initial investigation and apprehension of Jones.

Jones is being held in Cook County Jail without bond. The next court date is October 16, at 1:30 p.m. in room 105 at the Skokie Courthouse.
