For the second time in two weeks, the National Weather Service is warning Chicago residents of life-threatening waves, saying beach-goers should stay out of the water.
Waves heights of between three and five feet are expected, and swimming is prohibited at all lakefront beaches.
Drownings in Lake Michigan are already up dramatically this year. The Chicago Tribune reported earlier this week that 27 people have died in the lake this year, up from 15 by this time last year.
According to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, Lake Michigan is the deadliest of the Great Lakes. Experts say its length – more than 300 miles – can allow waves to increase in size and strength.
