Newly-elected Ald. Maria Hadden released a statement about the closure of three locally-owned Rogers Park businesses.

Popular coffee shop Royal Cafe joined the list of recent closures in the neighborhood after a decade of serving the community, with the owner citing a dramatic increase in rent. This comes on the heels of two other restaurant closures – Leona’s and The Heartland Cafe.

In a written statement about the closings, Hadden assured the community that, although these closures are troubling, she is committed to advocating for the small business community and hearing their voices.

“I’ve been in touch with all of the owners to learn about which challenges we as a community, and myself as Alderwoman, can work on to help our remaining incredible small business stay,” Hadden, who takes office May 20, said.

She said she plans to assign staff to support relations between her administration and local businesses. Furthermore, she plans on offering opportunities for public engagement in economic development.

“This is… an area where I believe community voice and participation can make a real difference,” writes Hadden.

Individuals who are interested in opportunities to participate in economic planning can learn more by joining her email list, according to Hadden.
