National Donut Day is June 1 this year, and some places are giving out free donuts to celebrate.

This holiday was established by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to recognize members who served Donuts to soldiers during World War 1. It’s celebrated on the first Friday in June every year.

There is still time to grab a free donut from one of these places around the Edgewater and Rogers Park neighborhoods:

Dunkin Donuts – Purchase any beverage and get your free donut.

Papa John’s – Customers will receive a free order of donut holes with any online pizza purchase, and the dessert will remain on the menu for a limited time after that.
